What are you grateful for? Contest #2

I'm grateful for my morning cup of coffee. Are you grateful for the perfect espresso? Here's a celebration of espresso painted by my artist hubby, John Tebeau.

A week ago, I asked who you’re grateful for and some of the great responses that came in ranged from “my husband” to “my daughter’s bus driver.”

There’s still time to enter that contest – and now let’s add another to the mix.
Besides the people you’re grateful for, what inanimate objects are you grateful for? What things make your life better?
My list ranges from farmers market to my morning cup of coffee, from my favorite shoes to my iPad, from our super-comfortable bed to our well-equipped kitchen. That’s just a start because I have a lot to be grateful for.
Tell me what you’re grateful for and you might win a gift basket of things I’m grateful for.
Comment on this blog post telling me what you’re grateful for and why, and I’ll choose my favorite and send  you a sampling of some of my favorite things – probably some coffee and dried fruit from my amazing neighborhood grocery store, Sahadi’s; a CD or two from favorite bands; maybe a kitchen gadget or two. I’ll assemble my little goodie box based on what inspires me and what seems appropriate for the winner.
Both contests close on Nov. 20 – you’re welcome to enter either or both and to submit multiple entries.
I’ll make my selection based on the sincerity of your gratitude, the reasons you give, creativity and originality. YouTube videos, photo slide shows and any other form of submission are welcome, in addition to good old fashioned text.

I'm Colleen Newvine, and I would love to help you navigate your evolution or revolution
Let’s work together

Among things, I am grateful for the key pocket on my running tights. It’s a small thing, but it makes me feel so FREE when I run. If it only held keys, it wouldn’t be THAT exciting. But, for example, yesterday I used it to hold my debit card, my lipgloss, my Kiehl’s eye cream, $20, AND my keys. (Pretty much everything a girl needs for a good time.)
Now that I’m thinking about it, maybe what I’m really grateful for is my running tights themselves. In addition to the key pocket, they’re also comfty and stretchy and do a pretty excellent job holding everything in place when I run.
Spandex running tights, where would I be without you?

I am grateful for my DVR because it allows me to watch Michigan football games, no matter what my toddler is doing. Throughout the first half on Saturday, I was able to hit the pause button any time he needed crackers or water or milk or his froggy or a book or … At halftime, he was ready for a nap, and so was I. But no need for despair: With the magic pause button I was able to nap for an hour and then sneak downstairs and watch the second half in peace.

I am grateful for the color pink: all shades of it, from screaming-hot-almost-orange to cool-subdued-almost-purple. Pink is a sunset, a bunny’s nose, a tropical bird or a Hawaiian lei. Little girls in pink hair ribbons. Hello Kitty dancing through my daughter’s bedroom. Pink is rosy is optimism is promise is glowing health. Pink is fresh new blooms and when I feel like winter will never end, all I need to do is wear a pink sweater, or put on my warm pink slippers, and suddenly spring flowers aren’t so far away. I write on a pastel laptop that some people call my Barbie computer but I call the best object in my house. It goes beautifully with my pink mouse and fuschia flash drive. I make calls on a polka-dot cell phone. I drink coffee from a princess mug. I painted my office such a beautiful shade that walking into it is like walking into a fluffy mound of cotton candy. Perhaps not everything is better when it’s pink, but it sure seems that way. Who needs rose-colored glasses when you have a rose-colored world?

I’m grateful for my spinning wheel. It provides the best antidote to the modern, virtual life by letting me create things tangible and directly useful. Because its simple mechanics enable complex results. Because you never stop learning how to use it. And because it is a tool of calm beautiful even when sitting idly in the corner.
