Deepak Chopra talks about the value of flexibility in the sixth spiritual law, detachment.
“This doesn’t mean you give up your intention to create your desire, you don’t give up the intention and you don’t give up the desire, you give up your attachment to the result.”
After hosting a goal-setting session for about a dozen women, with career coach Lauree Ostrofsky facilitating, my heart feels full recalling the enthusiastic support these ladies gave each other all day.
I used to think, as many people do, that if we’re unhappy with ourselves, we’ll be driven to get better. And if we were all of a sudden content with ourselves, we’d stop doing anything.
I no longer believe this.
I don’t know many people who don’t have goals or aspirations but almost everyone I know feels the tension of not accomplishing what they’d like. Some people struggle to find their passions but it seems many more have an idea in mind yet keep getting pulled away by distractions, procrastination and just life itself. Why is that? I have begun setting my passwords using motivational phrases so every time I log into my computer, it acts as a technological mantra.

For our new year’s card this year, we provided a range of verbs we felt showed actions of improving your life, including several pairs of actions: start and quit, commit and release, host and visit, save and give.
What do you think is the meaning of life? Recent research shows that people who have a sense of purpose live longer — so if you figure out why you’re here, you might even have longer to pursue that purpose. A Huffington Post piece with the headline, Sense Of Purpose Adds Years To Your Life, Study Finds, says in part: Researchers…
How do you plan your life? Not just the to-do list activities — pay bills, go to the grocery store, order Thanksgiving turkey — but the big stuff you value most? I’ve been in a variety of conversations lately about project management. For example: My husband, John, just finished a multi-month sprint to get about a dozen new pieces of…
Like many people, it’s easy for me to get caught up in my aspirations for more — a bigger home, more money, greater success. Harvard Business Review‘s article, The Disciplined Pursuit of Less, challenges that. Instead of more [fill in the blank with whatever you are chasing here], focus on the right things. Author Greg McKeown starts by defining “the…
How are those resolutions coming? If you’re already stumbling, maybe you need some positive peer pressure. Just after the new year, I spent the better part of a day with two of my favorite ladies working on our 2013 plans. The three of us are at different places in our lives, with different ambitions and different ways of organizing our…
It seems the socially correct answer to the question “How are you?” is no longer “Good,” but “Busy.” Maybe it’s all the technology that keeps us plugged in 24/7, or the never-ending flow of information from social media, websites and blogs, or the added work load on employees left at downsized companies. Whatever the cause, I frequently have conversations with…

New York Times columnist David Brooks recently ran an interesting amateur sociology experiment: he solicited what he called “life reports” from people 70 years old and up, sharing what they had done well and poorly, then he combed them for lessons. With the giant caveats that: these are people who read the New York Times and opted in to sharing…
You’ve probably heard the cliché that no one on his death bed wishes he’d spent more time at the office. But while I was there as both my mother and stepmother died, I don’t have any great insight into the psyche of the dying and what they wish they had or hadn’t done with their time on earth. So I…
My recent post on whether people can change generated a nice conversation over on Facebook, so I’m bringing those comments in here to share other perspectives: Margaret Yang I voted yes. People can change. The thing is, most people don’t want to! Don’t we all think we’re just dandy the way we are? Jeffrey SaugerPeople can change their synapses. They’ve…
Reading NPR’ s app on my way to the office recently got me thinking about one of my favorite questions — whether people are really capable of change. Terry Gross on WHYY’s Fresh Air did an interview about the new HBO series called “Enlightened,” and talked about that, among other things: Can people really change? That’s the question Laura Dern…
Ira Glass, host of This American Life, offers some great advice in this five-minute video below. He says it better — he is, after all, a professional storyteller — but the moral is that you start doing something because you appreciate that thing and those who do it well, but when you start out, your rookie ability will be nowhere…
