Your how-to resource for taking a break

Get all the benefits of travel and time away, simplified to help you to make your respite a reality. This book is the compass that will guide you through the planning process and straight into new possibilities.

I draw on my own experience of packing up with my husband, and sometimes our cats, to live in places ranging from New Orleans and San Francisco, to a cottage near the Atlantic Ocean on Long Island and three Costa Rican beach towns, then happily returning to our life in Brooklyn, New York.

But I’m not only sharing my decade of wisdom earned through trial and error, but I’ve also rounded up a diverse mix of fellow sabbatical travelers who share their own experiences and insights. You’ll hear from people who:

  • Worked remotely, traveled between jobs or took a formal sabbatical program.
  • Stayed in one place or explored multiple locales.
  • Visited domestic or international destinations.
  • Traveled with their kids of various ages.
  • Couch surfed, pet sat or won an artist residency to afford the experience.

Whether you crave adventure, relaxation or creative pursuits, this book will inspire you to stop daydreaming and start doing. You don’t have to quit your life. You can take an intermission. Quit your life temporarily.

You aren’t the only one interested in sabbaticals. “Your Mini Sabbatical” is a hot new release on Amazon.

You can do the entire course or just jump into the topic that’s most helpful to you.

what stands in your way?

We all have some obstacles to taking a mini sabbatical, so you’ll name yours. Then you’ll look for possible ways to overcome them.

what’s your mini sabbatical vision?

You won’t just create one, you’ll do four visions. Why? Because giving yourself room to experiment with different plans can help spark creative thinking.

who do you need to convince?

Whether you need to win over your boss, your spouse or your kids, you’ll prepare by identifying their possible concerns and what matters to them most.

An explorer looks out a telescope as she rides in a hot air balloon, where the balloon is actually the Earth.

what’s your budget?

You’ll compare your spending at home to what it might look like on a mini sabbatical. The numbers might just surprise you.

what might change with your finances?

Are there costs like your commute or day care that you’d eliminate by traveling? Might some shrink, depending on where you go? How could you sock away travel savings?

how will your plan evolve?

You don’t have to get it all right the first time. I encourage you to iterate until you find something that works for your time, budget and interests.

Self-paced modules make it easy for you to work the way that suits you best

Choose your own adventure

You’ll get access to all the worksheets and videos all at once. You can dedicate an afternoon to doing a course all at once or you can spread the modules out over several days, if that fits your life better. Do them in order or bounce around.

Choose the way you like to work. Each segment includes written instructions, a video and worksheets. Everyone learns differently, so whether you like to read or listen or watch, I’ve got you. I suggest you set aside some quiet time where you focus on yourself, but you can listen to the video while you’re exercising or on the go, if you’re more of a podcast person. You can sleep on the exercises or talk them over with friends. Create the experience that meets your needs and preferences.

Get interrupted? Pause the video for a minute or a week. Chip away at your worksheets as you have time. You control your progress.

Redo a lesson when you need it. As your life shifts and evolves, you might find a new need for a module. That could be a refresher on the idea or perhaps now your circumstances call for different thinking. Repeat whenever you need it.
