Do you have a personal theme song?

My friend Catherine has a blog called the Flamingo Room which has a fantastic summary: When your world is dark and smoky, just envision yourself in a dimly lit Havana nightclub back in the day. Mine is The Flamingo Room. Bring a friend, muddle a mojito. This is a Buena Vida social club – even when, especially when, you feel less than groovy.
Last week she wrote a great post about personal theme songs. In part, it said:

Every time the song “San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Some Flowers in Your Hair)” by Scott McKenzie comes on the radio, my mother recounts the first time she heard the song: “It was 1967. I was in a bathtub in London, listening to the radio, and thinking about what it would be like to be in San Francisco.” …

My friend, Chris, and I have mused that it would be cool if everyone had a theme song. It could play when you came into the office or arrived at a party. It’s hard to pick one song, though, isn’t it? Maybe our lives have a soundtrack with different songs calling up specific memories whose emotions remain so fresh they make you forget where you are for a moment. I once created a playlist on iTunes of songs through the years of my life. It was a way to honor my past with gentle thoughts and flowers in my hair.

When I was looking for a job after business school, and I had spent months getting not a single offer, I cheered myself up by adopting Frank Sinatra’s “I’m Gonna Live Until I Die” as my theme song. It reminded me not to give up and waste my time on earth.
I still love that song, just for different reasons. Now it’s about living life with gusto, living life intentionally.
What’s your theme song? Would you choose it for the lyrics, for the mood, for memories associated with it?
P.S. While you’re on the Flamingo Room, check out Catherine’s series of posts responding to the 29-Day Giving Challenge.

This reminds me of an old Bill Cosby bit about go-cart racing. Each kid had a theme song which he hums during competition. Cosby’s was from the “Rough Riders” (an old radio show). Old Weird Harold’s was the Lone Ranger theme (aka the William Tell Overture), and Cryin’ Charlie’s was from the Green Hornet.
