Deepak Chopra shares the equation for happiness

Deepak Chopra doesn’t seem to think happiness is all that complicated.
In an interview with the San Antonio Express-News, Chopra said happiness comes down to generosity, and that attention, appreciation and affection are the keys to generosity.

Chopra is the author of numerous books including “Seven Spiritual Laws of Success,”Creating Affluence” and “The Ultimate Happiness Prescription,” as well as being the namesake of the Chopra Center for Wellbeing in California, a blog, newsletter, radio programming, speaking engagements and more.
I first read the seven laws years ago and I’m still working on incorporating them into my life. It’s one thing to say you’re going to accept people and situations as they are, and quite another to do it, for example.
In that same San Antonio interview, with the how-can-you-not-read-this headline And the secret to happiness is …, Chopra shared the equation for happiness.
The data geek in me loved the idea that we can achieve happiness thusly:  H = S + C + V.

H is for happiness. S is the “set point” of the brain, says Chopra, which is “basically attitude.”
“Do you see problems or do you see opportunities? So S is responsible for about 40 percent of a person’s happiness on a daily basis,” he says.
C is conditions of living, mostly referring to physical conditions.
“Are you rich? Are you poor? C is about 10 to 12 to 15 percent at most. So if you win the lottery, you’ll be happy for a while, but at the end of the year, you’ll return to your basic set point. It doesn’t change who you are. In fact, some people get more mean-spirited.”
The last part of the formula is V. V is voluntary choices that you make.
“And if they’re only for personal pleasure, then your happiness is only temporary,” Chopra says. “So sex, shopping, entertainment, wine, going to a good restaurant, these do make you happy, but they fizzle out after 24 hours. There are other choices which give you meaningful fulfillment and purpose, such as when you are expressing your creativity. When you find meaning in your life and purpose, you have more long-lasting happiness, and that’s about 40 percent of your happiness experience. In that third portion is making other people happy.”
