Day 32: For every comment of gratitude, $1 to feed the hungry

Leading up to Thanksgiving, each day I will blog about what I’m doing to be more grateful. I invite you to join me in a Month of Thanksgiving, and to share your thoughts, observations, suggestions and ideas.
Day 32 — the final day: For every comment of Thanksgiving, I will make a $1 donation to Feeding America
Lots of us will eat so much today that we’ll very nearly burst. Too much stuffing, one more slice of pumpkin pie. We’ll waddle to the couch and groan about our gluttony.
To remind us what a blessing it is to have enough to eat, here’s my challenge: for every comment on this blog post today about something you’re grateful for, I will donate $1 to Feeding America.
Their Web site says:

Leave a comment here about why you're grateful and I'll donate $1 to Feeding America, formerly known as Second Harvest. You can also click here to donate yourself.

Feeding America is the nation’s leading domestic hunger-relief charity.  Our mission is to feed America’s hungry through a nationwide network of member food banks and engage our country in the fight to end hunger.
Each year, the Feeding America network provides food to more than 25 million low-income people facing hunger in the United States, including more than 9 million children and nearly 3 million seniors.

Gail Godwin asked people to tweet about why they’re grateful and she got about 100 responses.
She posted them on her Inspire Me Today blog — click here to read them. She also notes some trends in the gratitude:

Over 50% of those who responded were grateful for the people in their lives- the relationships with friends and family. Nearly 20% expressed thanks for being alive and their connection to God/the Universe. Possibility, opportunity and good health were mentioned in 15% of the responses.
But what stood out to me more than what people said, is what they didn’t say. Where’s the big house and the fancy car? Where’s the 6-figure a year job? Where’s the big bank account? Less than 3% of the responses included anything related to job, work or money, yet we focus much more than 3% of our time and energy in this area!

I will be curious to see if those same trends hold here.
Need some ideas about what to give thanks for? In the past month, I’ve given thanks for my husband, my family and friends. I’ve given thanks for simple pleasures like watching dogs play at the park, I’ve given thanks for my life’s regrets because of the lessons they’ve taught me, and I’ve even tried to give thanks for the things I hate and the things I want, because of the blessings hidden in those feelings.
You can read the whole Month of Thanksgiving, or just skim it for inspiration, by clicking here.
Once you’ve got an idea or three, leave a comment below answering this question: What are you grateful for and why?
I will count the comments and for each one made by midnight Thursday, I will donate $1 to help feed America’s hungry, up to $1,000.

I'm Colleen Newvine, and I would love to help you navigate your evolution or revolution
Let’s work together

Reading your offer on Twitter prompted me to comment – how sweet of you!
I’m thankful for the simple things in life – the ability to choose what to have for dinner (meaning I have plenty of food available), being able to walk my puppy every night (because I have two stable legs)….
I read a story in today’s Detroit Free Press (my hometown paper) – stories like this are the reason people should be thankful for the simple gift of life every waking day:

There was a time in my life when I honestly thought I would end up childless and unhappy. Now, I have a most amazing man to share my life with, and 4 children that remind me every single day what happiness truly is. I thank God daily for the blessings he gave me.
My siblings, who have taught me so much, give me reason for thanks as well. Besides supporting me no matter what, they are wonderful people who I enjoy talking with often. I am thankful my sister’s cancer has not returned and that my Dad has found some happiness after losing my Mom. My in-laws are people I am honestly glad are a part of my life, and I feel rather lucky and thankful for that, as I know I am in the minority.
Lastly, for my friends and my pets. My friends who routinely check on me, who reach out and are there, even if I can’t. For my friends who I can only occasionally stay in contact with.. but who still know they are dear to me. For every person who has touched my life, either positive or negative (giving me a learning experience) I am thankful. My pets, who didn’t ask to be a part of my life (well.. Jazzie Cat did.. actually demanded to be a part of it), but who fill it so wonderfully anyway.
My life is so very good right now, it is hard not to be thankful for everything 🙂

I am grateful for my family. Sorry for the cliche, but when I try to distill where my consistent encouragement, unfailing comfort and greatest happiness comes from, I am always lead back to my family. Unconditional love is a gift that makes anything possible.

Among other things, I’m grateful for our friends Jim and Courtney Rattenbury, who are having us over, once again, for a magnificent Thanksgiving feast at their place in Clinton Hill. Thanks guys!
Oh, and my WIFE, of course. I’m grateful for my wife. Of course.

I am grateful that I married my very own prince charming and that I’m still married to him twenty happy years later. Today is my anniversary!

This is late but I’m going to submit anyhow. So thankful that my entire family could spend the day together yesterday and enjoy one another. While I tend to expect stress, I’m generally pleasantly surprised by the fun the 15 of us can have together. I am truly blessed that both of my parents are healthy and vibrant enough to tolerate the mass of young people and are entertained by the antics of the day!

One of the things that I’m thankful for is that Rob and I made the decision four years ago to live with less. We both stopped working full time and have been sharing the responsibility of raising our children. Money has been tight, but every single day I feel lucky to have time to spend with my beautiful and amazing children. I don’t have to miss all of the new things they learn, I get to hear the funny things they say, I get to dry their tears, snuggle with them, read to them, play with them and teach them.
I’ve enjoyed your month of gratitude, Colleen.
