With all of the holiday parties around the corner, what is your number 1 tip for making the most out of attending holiday parties?

My tip for holiday parties is to make it a goal to meet and connect with one new person. This is an especially useful tip if you get overwhelmed by going into groups of people, and groups where you don’t know many folks in the room. I followed my own tip a few years ago and have made really good friends with that person I connected with at a friend’s party!

Eleanor, that’s how we know you and Mike — John and I went to a big event at Brooklyn Artists Gym where I didn’t know anyone, and I saw Mike standing alone by his paintings, which I thought were really beautiful. I figured, well, if he’s not talking to anyone, he’s going to be happy to have someone wander up and just compliment his work … and the rest is history!

What a great story of how you met….I think the “how we met” stories are the best – it’s a good reminder of why we put ourselves in new situations, go out of our way to say a simple “hello” and to celebrate the friendships we’ve developed over the years.

I recently participated in a conference call that suggested at every party, there are three people you need to talk to: your host, the bartender, and the drunk. If you talk to those three, the rest of the party will come to you.
I intend to try that this holiday season.
